What ANSI/ISEA 107 requires for Class 2
Class 2 is the workhorse visibility level for road-adjacent work: city road maintenance, warehousing and loading docks, airport ramp crews and utility work inside urban speed limits. The standard defines Class 2 by the finished garment, not by the fabric roll, and the numbers that matter are:
- Fluorescent background material: minimum 0.50 m² (775 in²) of visible fluorescent fabric.
- Retroreflective material: minimum 0.13 m² (201 in²) of reflective tape, placed so the wearer is recognizable as a human figure from all sides (360° coverage).
- Band configuration: the tape must outline the torso and pass over the shoulders, which is why a vest that is "mostly fluorescent" but missing shoulder straps fails the class.

Design details to lock before sampling
Most compliance problems are designed in, not manufactured in. Freeze these details in the written specification before a single sample is cut:
- Background color. Fluorescent lime-green and fluorescent orange-red are the two families accepted by the standard. Confirm the exact fabric lot — substituting a cheaper non-fluorescent "safety green" mid-program breaks compliance even when the tape layout is unchanged.
- Tape layout. Standard layouts are one horizontal band plus two shoulder straps, or a segmented "broken band" pattern for more movement. Changing tape width or removing a shoulder strap to save cost changes the class.
- Closure type. Zipper, hook-and-loop or 5-point breakaway — all can be compliant, but a breakaway front must still keep the tape continuous when closed. Decide by crew environment (tear-away for machinery-adjacent work).
- Pockets, ID panels and printing. Every added feature covers fluorescent area. Multi-pocket surveyor styles can still pass, but the placement must be engineered so the minimum area holds.
- Size grading. The class must hold in every size you sell. The smallest size (S or even XS in some programs) has the least fabric area, so it is the first to fail.
Labels and markings to check on the sample
The garment label is how an end buyer, safety officer or tender auditor verifies the class after delivery, so treat it as part of the specification rather than an afterthought:
- Standard and class statement — the ANSI/ISEA 107 edition and the Class 2 designation, permanently attached.
- Garment size — matching the size chart you publish to distributors.

- Fiber content and manufacturer identification — required for retail-ready programs in most destination markets.
